Sixteen facts about Late Mrs. Sushma Swaraj every proud Indian must know

The nation has received a huge setback on demise of the great national and international leader Mrs. Sushma Swaraj. This brief article is a tribute to the leader who has always been inspirational to every generation.

· Late Mrs. Sushma Swaraj was born on 14th February 1952 at Ambala Cantonment in Punjab, India. Her father Mr. Hardev Sharma was an active RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) member and mother Mrs. Laxmi Devi was a homemaker. The ancestral origins of Swaraj are from Lahore in Pakistan.

· She was one of the most revered Indian politicians, a great orator and a Lawyer at the Indian Supreme Court. A very senior leader of BJP (Bhartiya Janata Party) and a staunch supporter of RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh), she served as the Minister of External Affairs in the government of India from 2014 till 2019 under the leadership of Honorable Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi. Historically, she is the second woman after Late Mrs. Indira Gandhi to hold this office.

· She was an alumnus of Sanatan Dharma College (earned a Bachelorette in Sanskrit and political science), Ambala Cantonment and Panjab University (earned a degree in law), Chandigarh.

· During her college days, she won the award of the best Hindi speaker for three years consecutively by the competitions held by the language department of Haryana.

· Swaraj joined ABVP (Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad) in 1970 and started practicing as a lawyer in Supreme Court of India from 1973.

· Looking at Swaraj’s knack for law and leadership, Late Mr. George Fernandes appointed her in his legal defence team during the 1975 emergency. This was a major platform for Swaraj and she arose as a National leader of BJP immediately upon termination of the emergency.

· At an age of 25 years, Swaraj became the youngest cabinet minister of the Haryana government in 1977.

· In 1979 at an age of 27 years, she became the state president of Janata Party.

· She was BJP's (Bharatiya Janata Party) first female Minister of External Affairs, first female Union Cabinet Minister, first female General Secretary, first female Chief Minister, first female Leader of Opposition and a first female Spokesperson.

· She is the first and only lady MP (Member of Parliament) to be conferred the much coveted Outstanding Parliamentarian Award.

· She holds a distinct record of being elected seven times as an MP (Member of Parliament) in the Government of India and thrice as an MLA (Member of the Legislative Assembly) in the state government.

· The state of Delhi was once honoured to have her as their 5th Chief Minister in 1998 though for a very brief period.

· The great politician has a record of contesting as an electoral candidate from four Indian states eleven times.

· She was recently awarded the Grand Cross of Order of Civil Merit by the Government of Spain for facilitating evacuation of Spanish citizens during earthquake in Nepal in 2015.

· The Wall Street Journal called her as the “India’s most loved politician”.
